Hong Kong Tourist Board Launches New ‘Hong Kong Convention Ambassador’ Program to Revitalize the City’s MICE Industry
The Hong Kong Tourist Board (HKTB) launched the “Ambassador of the Hong Kong Convention” program with more than 100 distinguished executives from companies and professional bodies in Hong Kong to help revitalize Hong Kong’s MICE industry after a turbulent and difficult 2020.
With extensive connections, influence and a personal reputation in their respective fields, Ambassadors have a significant advantage when lobbying potential conference organizers to see Hong Kong as the preferred host city for future MICE events. .
“The Hong Kong Convention Ambassador program is formulated not only to host business events in the city when travel resumes, but also to promote the benefits of Hong Kong to the global business community and assist in the multi-sector recovery. “ said Dr YK Pang, chairman of HKTB. “The economic multiplier effect of organizing world-class MICE events is enormous. And the HKTB team is here to offer full support to the ambassador’s efforts.
The MICE multiplier effect in Hong Kong
On average, MICE visitors are high-yield travelers to Hong Kong who spend at least 20% more per capita than visitors in general, creating a larger multiplier effect on the city’s economy. MICE events also contribute to the recovery and development of the region, including the Grande Baie region.
The city is about to host its very first congress on artificial intelligence in the Grande Baie region with more than 2,400 participants in November 2021. “Hong Kong is in the best position to host this GBA event given its leading position as the most international city and a gateway to the mainland. The Ambassador Program will deepen the network between HKTB and business lines to bring even more top international events ”, said Mr. Henry Li, Marketing Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council.
A successful event led by an ambassador paves the way for more
Ambassadors play a key role in strengthening the city’s position as a premier MICE hub. Their efforts began to bear fruit, with the Hong Kong International Dental Expo and Symposium (HKIDEAS) held successfully in January, testifying to their efforts and paving the way for the 15th Asia-Pacific Congress of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons. Asia (ELSA 2021) to be held in November.
The three-day event HKIDEAS, the first trade fair held in the city since the fourth wave of COVID-19 hit in late 2020, has attracted an average daily attendance of more than 3,000 dental professionals. Ambassador Dr. Century Tsang, President of the Hong Kong Dental Association and Honorary Chairman of the HKIDEAS Organizing Committee, said: “We have worked closely with the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center to implement strict prevention and social distancing measures to ensure the event runs smoothly and safely. Our success proves Hong Kong’s unmatched qualities in hosting top-notch events, even under difficult circumstances.
Fellow Ambassador, Professor Philip Chiu, Associate Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and President of the ELSA 2021 Congress,
has made every effort to hold the annual congress in Hong Kong in November 2021. Taking place at the Hong Kong Science & Technology Park, ELSA 2021 is Asia’s largest conference on endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery. The event will bring economic benefits and further elevate the city’s medical status, paving the way for applications for more international medical events.
Professor Chiu said, “Hong Kong has a solid foundation and experience in hosting international medical conferences, thanks to its connectivity, the quality of its services, its efficiency and the city’s leadership in various medical fields. Along with leaders in other specialties, I am honored to help promote Hong Kong as an international city of conferences.
A solid recovery ahead
The strong alliance of convention ambassadors will amplify the appeal of Hong Kong by attracting more top MICE events to the city, leading to a strong recovery from COVID-19. With the overall support of the HKTB team, they will contribute significantly to strengthening the city’s status as a “The meeting place of the world.”
